Year 8 students build upon their experiences gained in Year 7 and design and make a clock based on the theme of space. The project starts when the class receive a letter (see Student Resources) asking them to design and make such a clock for a reputable company which has spare production capacity. The clock must have at least two features and be made from recyclable materials. Students then brainstorm space themes and come up with a design that satisfies the brief in the letter. Students are encouraged to draw their ideas in isometric but at times this does prove troublesome for them. Drawings must also include constructional details as well how to join the same or different materials. Once a cutting list is produced the teacher then provides the student with appropriate materials.
The course lends itself to the use of the computer controlled milling machine or laser cutter and several students may incorporate this in their projects where it is relevant.
Again Quality of Finish is key especially where acrylic is used.
Students also complete a presentation as a group of 4 or 5 on Recycling. They are provided with starter sites but are encouraged to investigate their own. The presentation has to be given to the class and students can use any multimedia equipment available in school. The idea is to provide not only facts but interesting information such as “if all the plastic bags we got from the likes of Tesco when we go shopping were laid side by side, in one year an area the size of London would be covered”.
